Buddha, Sanskrit, "awakened one."

1. A person who has achieved the enlightenment that leads to release from the cycle of existence (samsara) and has thereby attained complete liberation (nirvana). ...

2. The historical Buddha. He was born in 563 B.C.E., the son of a prince of the Shakyas, whose small kingdom in the foothills of the Himalayas lies in present-day Nepal.  ...

3. The "buddha principle," which manifests itself in the most various forms. Whereas in Hinayana only the existence of one buddha in every age is accepted (in which case the buddha is considered an earthly being who teaches humans), for the Mahayana there are countless transcendent buddhas. ...

Before He Was Buddha: The Life of Siddhartha by Hammalawa Saddhatissa - Here is a Buddha for the rest of us. Before He Was Buddha draws from 2,000-year-old Pali and Sanskrit texts to present a personal picture of the man who became the spiritual leader of one of the world's great religions. Unlike overly reverential biographies that treat him as a distant, divine figure, this book shows a very human seeker who discovers the secrets of life.

Buddha: A Short Biography - Book Review - by About
http://buddhism.about.com/library/weekly/aa100302a.htm

Buddha (May 1991) by Mitchell - book

Buddha by Hitz Demi - Celebrated children's-book illustrator Demi puts the Buddha's life story into words any child can enjoy. Even more, children will love the lush, meticulously painted scenes, rendered in traditional Asian fashion yet as light and whimsical as Calvin and Hobbes. (Ages 9 to 12.)

Buddha by Karen Armstrong - Armstrong's esteemed works, including such standards as A History of God and The Battle for God, have primarily focused on the monotheism of the Middle East. Now she turns farther eastward to craft this short biography for the Penguin Lives series. Armstrong carefully ties the Buddha's time to our own and champions his spiritual discoveries with an understated dignity that even the Buddha might bless. While exercising a scholar's restraint, she reveals a detectable compassion for Sidhatta Gotama, the radical who walked away from a pleasure palace because he refused to "remain locked in an undeveloped version" [of himself]. Armstrong overcame peculiar challenges to write about this historical figure who became "a type rather than an individual," as his personality and life particulars evaporated into the power of his selflessness. She turned this lack of details for a conventional biography to our advantage, opting to enhance Gotama's story with the broad canvas of his time and culture, thus making him accessibly human. This handsome and solid portrait is sure to become a classic; it is a refined and readable biography of a pivotal character in human history. It is likely true that when the 80-year-old Buddha died he had, as the sutra says, "gone beyond the power of words," but in this thoughtful and revealing study, Armstrong has come near to proving the scriptures wrong. (Feb.) Forecast: Despite the plethora of Buddhist books on the market, few recent Buddha biographies have been written for a general audience. Armstrong's superb reputation should help sales, and Viking plans a six-city author tour and national publicity.   Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Buddha: A Short Biography by John S. Strong - Most scholars believe that the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, was a historical person, but scholarly consensus about the historical Buddha ends there. Unlike Karen Armstrong's Buddha: A Biography [BKL Ja 1 & 15 01], Strong's life doesn't begin with the Buddha's birth and end with his death. Instead, Strong's begins eons before the Buddha's incarnation as Gautama, with the Jataka tales, a huge body of world literature that tells of the Buddha's past lives as persons, animals, and sometimes gods. Strong argues that the past lives tell us as much about the Buddha as do the stories of his final incarnation. He examines the stories of the Buddha's primary life, too, of course, and continues beyond it to the present day, considering the significance of his relics--the parts of his body enshrined throughout the world--and of the literary body of sutras that resulted from his teachings. Strong's fascinating approach to religious biography furnishes readers curious about the Buddha with a deep and broad introduction to his many lives. John Green

Buddha: A Beginner's Guide by Gillian Stokes - This handy series from Headway offers brief yet authoritative introductions to the cultural icons of our time. Each book examines the life, the work, and the legends surrounding its subject, and key terms and concepts are highlighted and clearly explained. Additionally, each chapter ends with a review section for easy reference and to help consolidate the reader's understanding of the text.

Buddha His Nirvana and Mahaparinirvana by K. Krishna Murthy - book

Buddha: Life and Work of the Forerunner in India - "A colorful and comprehensive chronicle of Siddhartha's life in India, this book documents the travels and experiences that led to the enlightenment of the young Buddha. It is filled with images of rural India--its animals, wilderness, people, and legends. The narrative has a sweetly formal simplicity, although it also possesses the ease and conversational quality of more modern styles. Rather than calling this book a channeled or written work, the publishers describe it as "received" knowledge. It was conceived by associates of Abd-ru-shin (Oskar Ernst Bernhardt, 1875-1941). This is a charming and devout recitation of the life of Buddha." -- NAPRA ReView, ABA, 1996

Buddha: The Story of an Awakened Life by David Kherdian - A simple, inspiring telling of the life of the Buddha by an award-winning, best-selling author. Here is an opportunity to approach one of the world’s greatest spiritual teachers through the timeless tale of his search for enlightenment and the end of suffering. This is the first account of the Buddha’s story that blends the elements of history, legend, and Buddhist teachings into a compelling, page-turning narrative. Experience the Buddha’s life, from his extravagant youth and ascetic renunciation to awakening and decades of profound teaching.

Heart of the Buddha's Teaching: Transforming Suffering Into Peace, Joy & Liberation by Thich Nhat Hanh - What should we think when on the one hand Buddhism tells us that life is suffering and on the other we are told to enjoy life's every moment? Loved around the world for his simple, straightforward explanations of Buddhism, Thich Nhat Hanh has finally turned his hand to the very core of Buddhism and conundrums such as this. In the traditional way, Thich Nhat Hanh takes up the core teachings one by one--the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Twelve Links of Interdependent Co-Arising--but his approach is as fresh as a soft breeze through a plum orchard. For illustration, he dips into the vast stores of Buddhist literature right alongside contemporary anecdotes, pointing out subtleties that can get glossed over in other popular introductions. He also includes three short but key sutras, essential source teachings from which all Buddhism flows. Studying the basics of Buddhism under Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh is like learning basketball from Michael Jordan. --Brian Bruya

I Once Was a Monkey: Stories Buddha Told by Jeanne M. Lee - Grade 2-5-A group of animals, sheltering in a cave from the fierce monsoon rains, hears a small statue of Buddha speak. The six stories he tells calm the beasts and teach them wisdom. Chosen from the hundreds of ancient Jataka tales, the selections are, like many of Aesop's fables, gems of moral philosophy. Lee's retellings not only encapsulate some of the teachings of Buddhism, but also suggest the centrality of Buddha in that religion. Each selection begins with a different incarnation of the Buddha: "I was then a willow tree..."; "I once was a monkey..."; "Long ago, I was born a golden antelope...." The smoothly flowing text shares each page with a bold block print, some in black and white and some with subtle colorings. Both words and pictures are arranged for reading aloud and invite comparison with other beast tales and discussions of Buddhist teachings. Like Demi's Buddha Stories (Holt, 1997), which shares only one tale with Lee's book, these stories will enrich collections of folk literature and parables from the world's religions.  Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ

Old Path, White Clouds: Walking in the Footsteps of the Buddha by Thich Nhat Hanh, Nguyen T. Hop - Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, has drawn from 24 Pali, Sanskrit, and Chinese sources to create this highly acessible retelling of the story of the Buddha. The simple style is engaging, leading the reader through events in the Buddha's life while taking care to present and reinforce the central meaning and tone of his teaching. This is not a scholarly study but rather a heartfelt interpretation that draws on important sources. The result is a beautiful and contemporary book that can offer an attractive introduction for those new to the subject as well as many bright moments for serious students of Buddhism. Recommended for college and public libraries. - Mark Woodhouse, Gannett- Tripp Lib., Elmira Coll., N.Y.

On The Buddha by Bart Gruzalski - This brief text assists students in understanding Buddha's philosophy and thinking so that they can more fully engage in useful, intelligent class dialogue and improve their understanding of course content. Part of the "Wadsworth Philosophers Series," (which will eventually consist of approximately 100 titles, each focusing on a single "thinker" from ancient times to the present), ON THE BUDDHA is written by a philosopher deeply versed in the philosophy of this key thinker. Like other books in the series, this concise book offers sufficient insight into the thinking of a notable philosopher better enabling students to engage in the reading and to discuss the material in class and on paper.

Prince Who Ran Away: The Story of Gautama Buddha by Fahimeh Amiri (Illustrator), Anne Rockwell (Author) - Gr 2-5-Combining aspects of folklore and biography, Rockwell creates a life of the Buddha. By using traditional elements and eschewing more contemporary historically based investigations, she establishes a smoothly flowing narrative that avoids unanswered questions and the need for a more complete backgrounding in the Hinduism out of which the Buddha came or daily life in ancient India. Because Buddhism is by definition a critical response to Hinduism, there are occasional moments in the book to which Hindus might take exception, but Rockwell does not aim to critique or denigrate Buddhism's parent but rather to present Buddhism as the Buddha might have seen it. Students interested in religion and those prone to ponder why things are as they are will find this an interesting and enlightening introduction to one of the world's chief religions. Amiri's illustrations are bright, expressive, and well keyed to the facing text.  Coop Renner, Moreno Elementary School, El Paso, TX

What Is Amida Buddha? by Nobuo Haneda
http://www.livingdharma.org/Living.Dharma.Articles/WhatIsAmida-Haneda.html

What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula - Beneath the enormous umbrella of Buddhism, there is a diverse galaxy of customs and beliefs, but there is also a kernel of truth that every sect holds dear. Rahula Walpola, scholar and monk, discovers this foundation of Buddhism for us first through straightforward explication, never skipping over a point that has yet to be substantiated, then through translations from key scriptures. Logical and focused, these are the essentials of Buddhism; know them first, then move comfortably on to other Buddhist works.
