Dorje

Originally, as lightning or thunderbolt (vajra), the weapon attributed to the Hindu god Indra, the source of the name of Tantric Buddhism (Vajrayana).  In this context it was interpreted as indestructible diamond.  The dorje is the symbol of the clear, immutable essence of reality that is the basis of everything.  Its immaculate transparency, which nevertheless gives rise to a profusion of manifestations, corresponds to the concept of shunyata stressed by Nagarjuna.  Also vajra.  In Tibetan buddhism the dorje is the masculine symbol of the path to enlightenment, standing for the upaya (skillful means) aspect.  The drilbu, or ritual bell, is the symbol of the feminine and stands for prajna (wisdom).  Both together reflect the duality of phenomenal reality.

One of the most important buddhakulas possesses as its basic quality the firmness of the dorje.  Dorje lopon (diamond master) is a title for a teacher who has fully mastered the skillful means of the Vajrayana and is able to pass them on to others.

A ritual implement related to the dorje, the origin of which has to do with the sacredness of metals, is the phurba (dagger).  It particularly symbolizes the subjugation of demons (aggression) and was used by Padmasambhava.

The secret mind of all the buddhas,
Omniscient wisdom
Transmitted by the symbol of eternal strength and firmness
Clarity and emptiness, the dorje essence
Like heavenly space--
It is wonderful to see the true face of reality!

Vajra - Vajra Sanskrit word meaning both thunderbolt and diamond. As a material device, the vajra is a ritual object, a short metal weapon - originally a kind of fist-iron like Japanese yawara - that has the symbolic nature of a diamond (it can cut any substance but not be cut itself) and that of the thunderbolt (irresistible force).

The vajra is believed to represent firmness of spirit and spiritual power.  It is a ritual tool or spiritual implement which is symbolically used by Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism, all of which are traditions of Dharma. Because of its symbolic importance, the vajra spread along with Indian religion and culture to other parts of Asia. It was used as both a weapon and a symbol in Nepal, India, Tibet, Bhutan, Siam, Cambodia, Myanmar, China, Korea and Japan.

King Vajra was Yadava dynasty's last surviving King , son of King Aniruddha. Also a common male name in Tibet and Bhutan. Vajra / Dorje can also refer to a small sceptre held in the right hand by Tibetan lamas during religious ceremonies.

In the Burmese language, three words come from Pali vajira, including "diamond" sein wazira), "thunderbolt [of Indra]" wazarein).
