Middle Way, a term for the way of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, which teaches avoidance of all extremes like indulgence in the pleasures of the senses on one side and self-mortifiction and asceticism on the other.  More specifically, it refers to the Madyamika school founded by Nagarjuna, which refrains from choosing between opposing positions, and in relation to the existence or nonexistence of all things, treads a middle way.    Read more from: Shambhala Dictionary of Buddhism and Zen

As there are two definitions to the Middle Way.  This page deals with avoidance of extremes.
See Madyamika for the school founded by Nagarjuna.

Asceticism and Its Critics: Historical Accounts and Comparative Perspectives by Oliver Freiberger - Book - Focusing on the critics of asceticism, their motives, their arguments, and the targets of their critique, these studies provide a broad range of issues for comparison. The comparative analysis, moreover, shows that the criticism of asceticism reflects a religious worldview as significant and widespread in the history of religions as asceticism itself is.
