Anthology of World Music: The Music of Tibetan Buddhism (Box Set) - Various Artists - CD - If, as the Lamas say, "Religion is sound," then the Anthology of World Music's focus on The Music of Tibetan Buddhism is witness to worship, an equally passive-active response to deity on the part of the listener. Bypassing the art and folk music of Tibet, this three-disc set reissues the 1961 field recordings of four main Buddhist sects in the Tibetan monasteries. Reverent liturgy and ritual is chanted and incanted in guttural droning vocal tones, tootled on horn, rung by bell, clanked by cymbal, and beaten on drum. Created is an amalgamation of layered tonal and atonal melodies as well as instrumentation and tradition drawing upon multiple influences from Buddhism's 8th century pilgrimage from India and the "Red Hat's" (Nyingmapa Sect) deep association with shamanism to the decade-long (at that time) Chinese occupation in Tibet. The results are highly intriguing, complex structures that serve not only as historical and cultural documentation, but collectively as a harbinger of faith. --Paige La Grone

Komuso: The Healing Art of Zen by Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin - CD - The Komuso were priests of the Fuke-Shu sect of Zen Buddhism who wandered Japan during the Edo period (1600-1868). These priests would take the problems and illnesses of people upon themselves, attempting to help them by playing a particular style of shakuhachi flute music called Sui-Zen. They sought to have their "patients" become completely embraced by their music, allowing them to let go of all distractions, worries, problems, and stresses. The "ko" in komuso means "emptiness" or "nothingness"; this concept of quieting the mind was the aim of these healing priests. Government reforms lead to abolishing the Fuke sect and abandoning all of its temples. It was only by good fortune that the healing repertoire of the Zen shakuhachi survived. In many ways, Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin is a modern-day komuso.

From Rhythm Magazine - Beginning in the 1950s, Deben Bhattacharya, a legendary ethnographer, traveled the world with a high-quality tape recorder, capturing traditions and cultures that he sensed might not have long to live. In India he taped older veena players, along with temple songs and prayers of Sikhs, Buddhists, Hindus and Bauls. Sacred Ceremonies: Ritual Music of Tibetan Buddhism Monks of the Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery - CD - This powerful sound is believed to emanate only from those who have attained a wisdom that transcends the self. Each vocalist produces a chord encompassing two or three tones through the intricate manipulation of overtones. Breathing plays an integral part in the creation of this remarkable sound; even the gya ling (Tibetan oboe) players use circular breathing to produce continuous tones from their instruments. The musical meditations are enhanced by rousing blasts of the dung chen, a pair of twelve foot long metal trumpets. Dramatic beats from bass drums and stirring splashes from large cymbals add to the sonic intensity of these exhilarating rituals.
Sacred Ceremonies, Vol. 2: Tantric Hymns & Music Of Tibetan Buddhism - Monks of the Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery - CD - There are the sounds of the conch shell for remembering death, and the invocation of the deities through ritual instruments like the gya ling (Tibetan oboes) and dung chen (twelve-foot metal trumpets). This time, the monks also created a sonic representation of the emanations of Buddha and the great empowerment of Bandruya, Kind of the Universe.
Sacred Ceremonies, Vol 3: Ritual Music of Tibetan Buddhism - Monks of the Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery - CD - the monks of Dip Tse Chok Ling selected prayers to honor the memory of Lama Tashi Gyaltsen, founder of the present day monastery, and the Dalai Lama, in celebration of his 60th birthday. They also honor and dedicate this volume to all Tibetan people.

Samadhi - CD - The Tranquility-Training Method (TTM) is a 21st century approach to meditation that will help you achieve a profoundly peaceful state of being. Tranquility-Training utilizes over forty years of consciousness research and a clinically proven brainwave entrainment technique that will help you reach a deep state of relaxation and clarity in your daily life. In combining your intention with the power of binaural beats, you can learn to reach deeper states of awareness as easily as wearing headphones. The word Samadhi has been used in the Yoga traditions to describe a state of unity with the divine. It is a meditation practice that requires many years of dedication. One must move the body and mind into a state of total serenity in order to open to the experience of union. This divine union is the subtle underlying cause of every spiritual system. Tranquility-Training teaches that union with the divine is available here and now for all who are willing. This meditation helps you learn to profoundly relax the body and quiet the mind so that you can realize the divinity within. 2 CDs with 4 Meditation Exercises.

Slow Gongyo Nichiren Daishonin Buddhist Meditation CD - Askland Technologies - CD - Learn the Buddhist Gongyo mantras with this Slow Gongyo recording. The correct pronunciation of the Nichiren Daishonin Gongyo can be an extremely difficult task. This audio presentation makes learning the Gongyo easier for new students of Buddhism, and also helps to solidify the existing techniques of more advanced students. --- The Japanese word gongyo literally means "assiduous practice." Generally speaking it means to recite Buddhist sutras in front of an object of devotion. In the practice of Nichiren Buddhism it means reciting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, and part of the second chapter "Hoben" and the entire sixteenth "Juryo" chapter of the Lotus Sutra in front of the Gohonzon. This is the fundamental practice of Nichiren Buddhism, which is performed morning and evening.

Tibetan Meditation Music - Nawang Khechog - CD - A lot of artists evoke the spirit of Tibet, but Nawang Khechog is actually a former Tibetan monk, who took off the robes and took up the flute to travel the world 20 years ago.
