Rinzai and Soto schools, one of the three schools of Zen in Japan.  It was originated by the Chinese master Yin-yuan Lung-ch'i, who founded the school's main monastery, Mampuku-ji, in the middle of the 17th century in Uji near Kyoto.  The Obaku school is a subsidiary lineage of the Rinzai school; in present-day Japan it possesses hardly any active monasteries and is thus the least influential of the three schools of Zen in Japan.

Yin-yuan was originally the abbot of Wan-fu-ssu, a monastery on Mount Huang-po in China.  In the year 1654 he came to Japan, where in 1661 Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi had a monastery in the Chinese Ming style built for him.  Yin-yuan gave this monastery the name Obaku-san Mampuku-ji.  In 1671 Mu-an Hsing-t ao, a Chinese monk and student of Yin-yuan's who had accompanied the latter to Japan, founded the Zuisho-ji monastery in the vicinity of Tokyo, which became a strong force in spread Zen reality that in unenlightened persons (bonpuno-johiki) is obscured by delusion.
