Refuge; Kyabdro in Tibetan; "taking refuge."  For all schools of Tibetan Buddhism, the ritual act of taking refuge is a strict prerequisite for any kind of relationship with the buddhist teaching (dharma).  In Hinayana and Mahayana, the three objects of refuge are:

(1) the Buddha,
(2) the teaching (dharma), and
(3) the spiritual community (sangha).

These grant protection to the spiritual seeker and are known as the three precious ones (triratna). Unreserved recognition of these three principles and devotion to them is expressed through the formal taking of refuge. The "diamond vehicle" (Vajrayana) expands the formula by adding the guru (lama), and in certain schools the refuge is sixfold. In that case, t the three precious ones are added the "three roots":

(4) guru,
(5) personal deity (yidam), and
(6) powers of inspiration (dakini).
