"Group, aggregate, heap"; term for the five aggregates, which constitute the entirety of what is generally known as "personality."
They are:
(1) corporeality or form (rupa),
(2) sensation (vedana),
(3) perception (Sanskrit, samjna; Pali, sanna),
(4) mental formations (samskara),
(5) consciousness (vijnana).
These aggregates are frequently referred to as "aggregates of attachment" (upadana-skandha), since (excluding the case of arhats and buddhas) craving or desire (trishna) attaches itself to them and attracts them to itself; thus it makes of them objects of attachment and brings about suffering.

The characteristics of the skandhas are birth, old age, death, duration, and change.  They are regarded as without essence (anatman), impermanent (anitya), empty (shunya), and suffering-ridden (duhkha).

The aggregate of corporeality (also form or matter) is composed of the four elements - the firm, fluid, heating, and moving [mahabhuta], of the sense organs, their objects, and so on.  The sensation aggregate consists of all sensations, unpleasant, pleasant, or neutral.  Perceptions include perception of form, sound, smell, taste, bodily impressions, and mental objects.  The aggregate of mental formations (also translated "psychological powers of form" or "mental impulses") includes the majority of mental activities such as volition attention, discrimination, joy, happiness, equanimity, resolve, exertion, compulsion, concentration, and so on.  The consciousness aggregate includes the six types of consciousness (consciousness of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, bodily sensation, and mental consciousness), all of which arise out of contact between the object and the corresponding organ.

Shurangama Sutra: Fifty Skandha Demon States: Volume VIII by Buddhist Text Translation Society - Born in Manchuria, China in 1918, the late Master Hsuan Hua became a monk at age 19. He taught at the Nan Hua Vinya Academy in Canton where the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng taught in the 7th century. In 1962, he came to America with the vow to establish orthodox Buddhism in the west. Before his passing, he had established 28 monasteries in North America and Asia and lectured the sutras for 50 years.
