Little Pilgrim: A Novel by Ko Un - book - Un, a former monk, admits he had no interest when, years ago, a senior monk suggested he compose an epic poem on the endless wanderings of the child Sudhana in his quest for truth as portrayed in the last book of the Avatamsaka (Garland) Sutra. Later, after leaving the monastic life, Un identified with Sudhana's quest and in 1969 began publishing regular newspaper installments (in prose) of The Little Pilgrim (which have since become the first 30 chapters of this book). The story, completed here, is a series of 53 encounters between a young orphan boy "whose heart is awakened" and various teachers (some in the guise of animals and supernatural creatures).

Nixon Under the Bodhi Tree and Other Works of Buddhist Fiction by Kate Wheeler - book - Wheeler has assembled a stellar collection, including the titular "Nixon Under the Bodhi Tree," an O. Henry awardâ€"winning story by Gerald Reilly. Many stories, with their Zen sparseness, clean imagery and lingering depths, could proudly stand beside the finest of the genre, such as the fiction of Gail Tsukiyama. Marie Henry's half-page story, "At the Change of Seasons," is so spare and profound it reads like a haiku that's been gently stretched into prose. Some speak so intimately to the teachings of Buddhism that they read like inside jokes which isn't necessarily a bad thing, considering how satisfying these jokes are to insiders.

Story of Buddhism: A Concise Guide to its History & Teachings by Donald S Lopez - book - Lopez, a professor of Buddhist studies at the University of Michigan, says that his primary aim for this book is "to focus on Buddhist practice as a religion." Unlike more superficial how-to books on Buddhism, this book gives a thorough historical and theological explanation of Buddhism's major tenets, starting with Buddhist cosmology and then moving to chapters dedicated to the Three Jewels of Buddhism (the Buddha, dharma and sangha) before ending with a chapter on enlightenment. Interspersed are anecdotes intended to teach key principles in keeping with the idea of Buddhism-as-story.

You Are Not Here and Other Works of Buddhist Fiction by Keith Kachtick - book - The Buddhist tradition is rich in stories, especially those that help teach the sutras. You Are Not Here and Other Works of Buddhist Fiction takes the sutra tradition into new and unexpected places. Zen Fables for Today by R Mclean - book - Mindfulness, compassion, humor, and enlightenment are the cornerstones of Zen philosophy--a way of thinking and being that is practical and liberating today as it was two thousand years ago. In these lovely and deceptively simple parables are relevant truths for our modern times.
Zen Inklings: Some Stories, Fables, Parables, and Sermons by Donald Richie - book - Donald Richie strays from his core strength, Japaense cinema, and writes stories - some invented, some historical - about Zen. Much as "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" is not a tome of Buddhism, this book should be taken for what it is: stories about Zen from an interested non-practioner. As one of the stories suggests, those who are enlightened have no use for writing or reading about Zen anyways. -from a buyer
Zen War Stories by Brian Vitoria - book - Following the critically acclaimed Zen at War (Weatherhill Publishers, 1997), Victoria now explores the intimate and supportive relationship between Japanese institutional Buddhism and militarism during the Second World War. He reveals for the first time, based on the wartime writings of the Japanese military itself, that the Zen school's view of life and death was deliberately incorporated into the military's programme of 'spiritual education' so as to develop a fanatical military spirit in both soldiers and civilians.
