Stupa - Sanskrit.  (Pali, thupa; Tibetan, choten) "Hair knot"; characteristic expression of Buddhist architecture, one of the main symbols of Buddhism and a focal point in temples and monasteries.

Originally stupas were memorial monuments over the mortal remains (sharira) of the historical Buddha and other saints.  They also served, however, as symbolic reminders of various decisive events in the life of Shakyamuni Buddha.  Thus stupas were built at Lumbini, Bodh-gaya, Kushinagara, Sarnath, and so on.  At the latest by the time of King Ashoka (3d century B.C.E.), the veneration of saints had become a general custom; the stupas from his time are still preserved.

Not every stupa contains relics in the proper sense; in their place sacred texts and representations are also enshrined, which confer their sacredness on the stupa.   Stupas are often purely symbolic structures; examples are Borobudur and the three-dimensional mandalas of Tibet.

Buddhist Stupas in Asia: The Shape of Perfections by Bill Wassman - book - Lonely Planet presents Buddhist Stupas in Asia: The Shape of Perfection, exploring stupas (sacred structures that function as memorials of enlightenment) in 13 Asian countries. As shown in more than 250 color photographs, stupas are tremendously diverse in appearance, ranging from gold-topped domes to marble temples to giant sculptures. Some stupas serve as reliquaries, or repositories for relics of enlightened masters. This informative, beautiful book is a fine introduction to the sacred art and architecture of Buddhism.

Consecration of Images and Stupas in Indo-Tibetan Tantric Buddhism by Yael Bentor - book - The present work is an investigation of the Indo-Tibetan ritual for consecrating images, stupas, books and temples. It is based on a thorough examination of the relevant Tibetan textual material contained in Tantras, commentaries, ritual manuals and explanatory works on consecration. As rituals are meant to be performed, this textual study is combined with observations of performances and interviews with performers. The book opens with a general discussion of certain principles of tantric rituals and the foundations of Indo-Tibetan consecration. The main part focuses on a specific performance of the ritual in a Tibetan monastery located in the Kathmandu Valley. This volume contributes to the often neglected field of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist rituals. It is concerned with the sacred nature of objects for worship as well as with the main Buddhist tantric transformation into a chosen tantric Buddha.
