"Weft, context, continuum"; in Tibetan Buddhism, a term for various kinds of text (medical Tantras, astrological Tantras, etc.); however, primarily a general concept for the basic activity of the Vajrayana and its systems of meditation.  The expounding of the Tantras is attributed to Buddha Shakyamuni in his dharmakaya (trikaya) manifestation.  In this case, Tantra means "continuum" or "system."  The tradition, which is strongly oriented toward human experiential potential, describes spiritual development in terms of the categories of ground, path, and fruition.  The ground is the practitioner; the path is the path of meditation, which purifies this ground; the fruition is the state that arises as an effect of Tantric practice.  All forms of Tantra relate to these three phases.

The Tibetan tradition speaks of four classes of Tantra: kriya-tantra (action Tantra), charya-tantra (elaboration Tantra), yoga-tantra, and anuttara-yoga-tantra (supreme yoga Tantra).  The criteria for this classification are the differences in the spiritual capacities of practitioners and the corresponding effectiveness of the means for leading them to enlightenment.  Among the most important works of the supreme yoga Tantra are the Guhyasamaja-tantra and the Kalachakra-tantra.

The "ancient Tantras" of the Nyingmapa school divide the supreme yoga Tantra into three further categories: maha, anu, and ati-yoga (dzogchen).  These Tantras take the purity of mind that is always already present as the basis for their practice.  The best-known of them is the Guhyagarbha-tantra.  The polarity-oriented thought of the Tantras finds its strongest expression in a many-layered sexual symbology.  Transcendence of the duality of the masculine principle (skillful means, upaya) and the feminine principle (wisdom, prajna) through the union of the two is given as the key characteristic of the supreme yoga Tantra.

Picture of the book: The Book of Secrets Book of Secrets: 112 Keys to the Mystery Within by Osho - In this comprehensive and practical guide, the secrets of the ancient science of Tantra become available to a contemporary audience for the first time. Confined to small, hidden mystery schools for centuries, and often misunderstood and misinterpreted today, Tantra is not just a collection of techniques to enhance sexual experience. As Osho shows in these pages, it is a complete science of self-realization, based on the cumulative wisdom of centuries of exploration into the meaning of life and consciousness. Tantra-the very word means "technique"-is a set of powerful, transformative tools that can be used to bring new meaning and joy to every aspect of our daily lives.

Picture of the book: Crystaland the Way of Light Crystal and the Way of Light: Sutra, Tantra and Dzogchen by Chogyal Namkhai Norbu - Within Tibetan Buddhism, there is a little-known discipline called Dzogchen, the turbo path to liberation. In some traditions, the path to liberation extends over lifetimes of diligent practice, but Dzogchen is an accelerated way to achieve self-perfection. After many years of formal study, Chogyal Namkhai Norbu was initiated into this less-formal practice, which is one of the highest yet most accessible of Tibetan Buddhist teachings. Namkhai Norbu eventually made his way to Italy to teach, where John Shane transcribed and translated Namkhai Norbu's lectures, putting together what is now one of the most popular books on Dzogchen. Namkhai Norbu makes it clear that these teachings are not a handbook for practice but rather an overview of Dzogchen, notably its three divisions: the base, the path, and the fruit. The ultimate and immediate goal is to achieve the primordial state of non-dual awareness, the one taste, and to maintain it. With colorful anecdotes from his own experience (finding an ancient text manifested in a dream, for example, and visiting eccentric cave yogis), Namkhai Norbu's teachings illustrate that Dzogchen is not just theory but the way to a new, and almost incomprehensible, way of being. --Brian Bruya

Picture of the book: The Ecstasy of Enlightenment: Teaching of Natural Tantra Ecstasy of Enlightenment: Teaching of Natural Tantra by Thomas Cleary - The Ecstasy of Enlightenment is an inside look at the spiritual world of Tantra--one of themost sophisticated, alluring, and controversial forms of Buddhism. Cleary unlocks the mysteries of the Carya-Giti, a collections of teachings by more than twenty famous Siddhas, or Tantric adepts, who lived during the illustrius Pala dynasty of old Bengal. These teachings emanate from one of the most dynamic sources of international Buddhism, at the height of its religious development, and as such, they are completely nonsectarian. Particularly noteworth is Cleary's demonstration of the parallels between Tantric Buddhism in Old Bengal and the original Zen Buddhism of China.

Picture of the book: The Encyclopedia of Yoga and Tantra Encyclopedia of Yoga and Tantra by Georg Feuerstein - The ever-increasing popularity of Yoga and related practices makes a desktop reference like this indispensible. With over twenty-five hundred entries and extensive illustrations, it combines comprehensiveness with accessibility. The book is arranged and written in a manner that will inform rather than overwhelm the lay reader, while at the same time offering valuable references for the professional researcher and the historian of religion. This new edition includes information about contemporary Yoga teachers. It also provides fuller descriptions and illustrations of Yoga poses, and features additional cross references.

Picture of the book: The Generation Stage in Buddhist Tantra Generation Stage in Buddhist Tantra by Gyatrul Rinpoche - This book offers an exceptionally clear and accessible presentation of the generation stage practices of deity yoga. Gyatrul Rinpoche explains the state of mind to be established at the beginning of the practice session, the details of the visualization sequences, the three types of offerings and proper mantra recitation, as well as mudras, tormas and malas. Practitioners from all lineages of Tibetan Buddhism will find that these teachings enhance their understanding of sadhana practice. Rinpoche's detailed explanations make it possible to practice these meditations as they were intended and as they were practiced in Tibet and ancient China.

Picture of the book: Introduction to Tantra Introduction to Tantra: The Transformation of Desire by Lama Thubten Yeshe - According to Buddhism, every human being has the potential to achieve profound and lasting happiness. And according to the tantric teachings of Buddhism, this remarkable transformation can be realized very quickly if we utilize all aspects of our human energy, especially the energy of our desires. Introduction to Tantra is the best available clarification of a subject that is often misunderstood. This new edition of the classic text includes a new foreword by Philip Glass and new cover art, but leaves untouched Lama Yeshe's excellent original text, edited by Jonathan Landaw. Tantra recognizes that the powerful energy aroused by our desire is an indispensable resource for the spiritual path. It is precisely because our lives are so inseparably linked with desire that we must make use of desire's tremendous energy not just for pleasure, but to transform our lives. Lama Yeshe presents tantra as a practice leading to joy and self-discovery, with a vision of reality that is simple, clear, and extremely relevant to 21st-century life.

Picture of the book: Kundalini Tantra Kundalini Tantra/2009 Reprint by Swami Satyananda Saraswati - This is a totally revised Edition of Kundalini Tantra brought out by Yoga Publications Trust which has been formed as a separate entity exclusively for Publishing the Books brought out by Bihar School Of Yoga.Kundalini Yoga is a part of the tantric tradition. Even though you may have already been introduced to yoga, it is necessary to know something about tantra also. Since ancient times, the wise have realised that mind can be expanded and that experiences do not necessarily depend on the object. This means that if somebody is playing music, I can hear it, and if somebody has painted a picture, I can see it, but I can also see if there is no picture, and I can also hear if there is no music. This is also a quality of man's personality which has been ignored in the last 150 to 200 years. This Book presents a systematic and pragmatic approach to the awakening of kudalini, which arouses greater intelligence from it's sleep and you can give birth to a new range of creativity.

Picture of the book: The Lion's Roar Lion's Roar: An Introduction to Tantra by Chogyam Trungpa - This book is based on two historic seminars of the 1970s, in which Chögyam Trungpa introduced the tantric teachings of Tibetan Buddhism to his Western students for the first time. Each seminar bore the title "The Nine Yanas." Yana, a Sanskrit word meaning "vehicle," refers to a body of doctrine and practical instruction that enables students to advance spiritually on the path of Buddha-dharma. Nine vehicles, arranged in successive levels, make up the whole path of Buddhist practice. Teaching all nine means giving a total picture of the spiritual journey. The author's nontheoretical, experiential approach opens up a world of fundamental psychological insights and subtleties. He speaks directly to a contemporary Western audience, using earthly analogies that place the ancient teachings in the midst of ordinary life.

Picture of the book: Shamanism and Tantra in the Himalayas Shamanism and Tantra in the Himalayas by Surendra Bahadur Shahi - The Himalayan kingdom of Nepal may be the only culture in the world where both shamanic and tantric techniques are still alive and in full practice today. The result of eighteen years of field research, Shamanism and Tantra in the Himalayas presents for the first time a comprehensive overview of shamanism that is based on the knowledge and experience of the different tribes from that region. Included are original statements from the various ethnic groups and 135 color thangkas, which act as visual guides to the specific practices of the tantric tradition. In addition to the thangkas, the book is lavishly illustrated with numerous photos of different shamanic healing ceremonies, ritual objects, and culturally significant plants that have never been published before. The book also contains a wealth of original recipes, smoking mixtures, scientific tables, charts, and descriptions of more than 20 plants whose psychoactive properties and uses by shamans have never before been researched or documented.

Picture of the book: Tantra Tantra: Path of Ecstasy by Georg Feuerstein - Consider for a moment that the Dalai Lama is a tantric adept, and those visions of sexual bliss that the word "tantra" conjures up quickly dissolve. Tantra is more than the sex play of popular articles and books. Georg Feuerstein, authority of the yogic traditions, conjures up a much richer world of Hindu cosmology, philosophy, and theology. Tantra is a form of devotionalism, in which ritual sounds, gestures, and actions figure prominently. Reverence of the guru as god also plays a part, but Feuerstein tempers our suspicion by repeating the admonitions of tantric texts down through the ages to choose carefully. As much prudence must also go into reflection on the disciple's own person, who engages in strict yogic discipline designed to conquer the six enemies: desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride, and envy. Feuerstein draws on the ancient texts to describe the tantric path in great detail, including realization of the subtle body, directing energy through the chakras, and, yes, sex. Taken together, tantra becomes a vivid, multifaceted path to self-realization. --Brian Bruya

Picture of the book: Tantra Tantra: The Supreme Understanding by Osho - In this all-time best seller, Osho discusses the mystical insights found in the ancient Tantric writings, and the many significant Tantric meditation techniques that are as relevant to the modern-day seeker as they were to those in earlier times.
As always, Osho brings his own unique blend of wisdom, humor, and thought-provoking inspiration to even this complex subject, making it accessible to the widest possible audience.

Picture of the book: Tantra: The Way of Action Tantra: The Way of Action: A Practical Guide to Its Teachings and Techniques by Francis King - Tantra has been defined as a "mystical philosophy" and as an unorthodox branch of Buddhism, Hindism, and Jainism. It has also been described as an occult technique concerned primarily with polarity and sexual practices. Although each of these definitions contains an element of truth, none of them is complete.

While Tantra has mystical, philosophical, and religious aspects, it is, above all, a technique of action--a path of physical, mental, and spiritual disciplines incorporating meditation, yoga, and sacramental worship. Its sole purpose is the transformation or spiritual rebirth of the individual into a new existence and an enlightened state of consciousness.

In Tantra: The Way of Action, Francis King provides a complete theoretical and practical guide to the Tantric path of liberation. Topics covered include esoteric physiology, Qabalism, pleasure and pain, power and passivity, right-hand and left-hand Tantra, and the arousal of the Kundalini serpent power. Following the spirit rather than the letter of the tradition, King maintains that Tantric techniques are universal processes. As such, they transcend the limitations of specific faith or dogma and are adaptable to Western culture and lifestyle.

Picture of the book: Tantra Unveiled Tantra Unveiled by Pandit Rajmani Tigunait - Head of the Himalayn International Institute, Tiguanit offers a clear, calm, open guide to Tantric practices that are often shrouded in mysterious language; mantras, chakras, and symbolic hand-gestures are all clearly explained and illustrated. This primer is perhaps as good a printed guide to esoteric Hindu practice as the uninitiated Western seeker can hope to find. For larger collections.

Picture of the book: Yoga Spandakarika Yoga Spandakarika: The Sacred Texts at the Origins of Tantra by Daniel Odier - The oldest masters of Spandakarika viewed everything in the universe, including matter, as consciousness and created a yoga practice in accordance with this realization. The sacred dance of Yoga Spandakarika, Tandava, is extremely subtle and difficult, requiring thousands of hours of practice to master, yet it surpasses any other physical practice, allowing the practitioner to touch the divine inner pulse. Once its third stage has been mastered, the yogi or yogini is able to manifest the dance of Shiva in space, a tradition visible in the statuary of Tantric temples in India and Tibet. Energy is no longer contracted by the perception of duality, and the mind and body become unbounded, forming a sphere that contains all that was formerly outside. In Yoga Spandakarika Daniel Odier passes on these vanishing teachings as he received them from his Tibetan master, Kalu Rinpoche, and Kashmiri yogi Lalita Devi.

Picture of the book: Yoga, Tantra and Meditation in Daily Life Yoga, Tantra and Meditation in Daily Life by Swami Janakananda Saraswati - The author demonstrates how you can practice Tantric Yoga and go on living your life as you usually do, adding another habit to the ones you already have. The step-by-step, well-illustrated instructions in this book take you from beginners' exercises to those for advanced students. You will learn how to meditate easily, breathe correctly during yoga or meditation, and how to do easy yoga poses and exercises, such as the back program to improve posture and maintain youthfulness, and a great deal more!

Picture of the book: Yoga Tantra Yoga Tantra: Paths to Magical Feats by HH the Dalai Lama - Students of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition who have advanced beyond introductory levels will appreciate this challenging, more advanced teaching. Based on the third book in a series of Vajrayana teachings developed by a Tibetan scholar in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, this book explores "paths to magical feats" through a dedicated practice of Yoga Tantra. (Readers will probably want to begin with Tantra in Tibet, which Snow Lion published in 1987.) This volume builds upon the practice of deity yoga, which was introduced in the series' second book, in which a person "joins one's own body, speech, mind, and activities with the exalted body, speech, mind, and activities of a supramundane being." The introduction lays out the features of Yoga Tantra, drawn from lectures the Dalai Lama gave in India in 1979 and 2002, and is followed by more detailed expositions of the teachings. Readers who have minimal background in esoteric Buddhism will undoubtedly be confused by how the four mandalas correspond to the four seals and lineages, though even neophytes should be able to use the book to deepen their practice of "calm abiding" and mental focus. Highly advanced practitioners who have mastered yogic union can eventually attempt magical feats such as revealing treasure and mineral wealth in the ground, walking on water, walking in space, finding lost articles and controlling the mind of another.
